Standard Haidong Gumdo Terminology
Typically Haidong Gumdo is always taught using Korean terms and commands. The following are an equivalent English translation.
The direction of the cuts and blocks are named from here the motion starts. The same applies to the thrusts, but it also identifes the angle of the sword during the thrust.

Up
Spacing - management of the distance between self and opponent.

Timing - management of when to move or perform an action.
​
Testing - actions are designed to gauge opponent’s reactions and skill.
​
Opening - place where the opponent is undefended.
​
Baiting – a movement or action that is intended to provoke a specific action or motion.
Strategy
Continuous - a sparring round that is stop and reset as little as possible. Designed to improve flow and endurance.

Stop and adapt - a sparring round at is stopped when a successful attack is made. The sequence of actions that led to the successful attack is repeated until a successful defense can be made.
​
Competition - a sparring round that is governed by rules to determine a winner. Designed to increase skill through a more sport oriented setting.
Sparring
Linear - moving toward or a way from opponent is a straight line.
​
Off line - moving to one side of the linear line between self and opponent.
​
Circular - moving in an arc like manner around opponent.
​
Flow - rhythm of moving from one action to another and the use of momentum.
​
Drop / Step Slide - movement of hips, legs, and feet to create power.
​
Press - to move aggressively with action directly at one's opponent to disrupt their action or motion.
Motion
Cut - an attack that uses the edge of the sword.
​
Hit - an attack that uses the back or flat of the sword.
​
Thrust - an attack that uses the tip of the sword.
​
Block - the use of one's sword to prevent an opponent's attack.
​
Control - the use of one's sword to move the opponent's sword in a desired direction.
​
Empty Hand - any disrupting hit done without a sword, e.g. punches, elbow strikes, or kicks.
